How to make a DIY downspout splashblock out of ceramic dishes

If you've ever felt like the functional elements of your yard detract from your creativity, Daniel Przybylski, a Vacaville, CA DIY blogger, has a fantastic tip for you. On a Hometalk post, Przybylski describes how to dress up a gutter downspout splashblock by using ceramic plates and a little bit of imagination.
Przybylski's source of inspiration? His wife's garden sculptures, which ultimately moved him to take something commonplace and make it a beautiful focal point for the yard. "I thought I would create an alternative to the cultured stone or resin gutter downspout splash blocks that are very common and somewhat boring," he says.

The only materials needed were three ceramic plates, a strong adhesive and a weight to help steady the plates while the adhesive dried. In his case, Przybylski found garden-themed plates at a discount store.
The process of arranging the plates takes a little concentration. Other than that, the main focus falls to making certain the adhesive covers all touching areas of the stacked plates. Full instructions can be found at Przybylski's project page
What a delightful departure from store-bought alternatives, which are often plastic or rubber and simply lack the decorative flourish provided by a whimsical DIY like this one.
As a fun solution to this item's mundanity, downspout splashblocks appear on buildings from Portland to Paris, inspiring creativity with everything from dragons, to fish to ducks releasing excess water on a rainy day. What an opportunity to breathe a little bit of fun and life into your home with a simple fixture!
