How to make a DIY planter in an old tree stump

There are many ways to remove a tree stump, but none of them are easy. If you are dealing with an unsightly dead stump, why not make the best of the situation and convert it into a beautiful, natural-looking planter? It can be done with the simplest of tools and some elbow grease.
Julie of Redhead Can Decorate carved out the middle of an old stump with a chisel and hammer. The folks from This Old House used a mattock -- a hand tool that's similar to a pickaxe -- for the same effect, using the chisel end to start the hole and the wider end to finish it.

Make your hole deep enough to accommodate the flowers' roots, then add soil and plant your seeds or starters.
If added drainage is needed, drill downward-sloping holes through the sides of the bowl and add small gravel to the bottom before filling with soil.
