How to add lace applique to chalk-painted furniture

With its low odor, and no-prep ability to stick to almost any surface, chalk paint is becoming more and more popular. Do-it-yourself gurus are using it with sprayers and brushes on glass, metal, concrete, laminate, porcelain and, of course, wood.
Chalk paint can also be used on outdoor furniture and comes in a variety of bright colors. Its flat finish means that if you want to add a top coat you can choose one with any level of sheen, shimmer or shine -- the only limit is your imagination!

The folks at Refresh Muncie love using chalk paint for their furniture "refreshing" projects. The video below shows how Refresher Connie uses a fabulous lace technique to give new life to an old dresser.
First, Connie paints the dresser with a base color of chalk paint and a top coat. When that is dry, she covers the drawers with long swatches of lace. She spray paints over the lace using thin, even strokes.
The effect of this refresh is absolutely stunning -- and all it took was some paint and a few replacement drawer pulls!
Connie notes that, in addition to its other wonderful qualities, chalk paint is ideal for distressing or antiquing items: "From a tiny bit of distressed detail to a heavily antiqued piece, you're completely in control."
If you haven't already discovered the joy of chalk paint, give it a try on your next DIY project. And if your technique is less than perfect, no worries. "If you spill something on your finished piece, it's super simple to clean up," Connie says.
