How to make perfect plant pots with cement and old materials at home

Some things are so complicated that you wonder how anyone could have dreamt them up. Others are so simple that you wonder how you didn't think of them first. This trick falls into the latter category. Concrete has been used for decades as a building material for a lot of reasons. Sure, it's fire-resistant, but there's more to it than that. Unlike structures made of steel, which have to be pre-fabricated before the building is erected, concrete can be poured on-site.
While cement is a commonly used material for building, it's less-often used for home projects. After seeing the tutorial below, that fact only becomes a greater mystery — it's clear that the uses of concrete are nearly endless. TheSorryGirls have used it to create a set of plant pots, and their end result is a careful pairing of industrial and modern design. We've listed out the steps below, but if you're looking to hear it from the source, we've included their video at the bottom of the article.

TheSorryGirls use a bunch of recycled materials to make their pots. One container was a Minute Maid orange juice container, another was an empty Haagen-Dazs pint, and a third was one of those small metal cans that contain frozen juice concentrate. When picking your containers, keep this in mind: you'll use two containers for each pot. The larger container will determine the shape of your pot, while the smaller container will dictate how much you can fit inside.
The creators of this DIY project used sand concrete for their mix, stating that it's "one of the finest concretes you can buy." The actual measurements of the materials you use are less important than the ratio of concrete to water. They recommend a 4:1 ratio, but the package you buy will likely have instructions, too.
After mixing their "ingredients" to a peanut butter-like consistency, the hosts fill their desired container, leaving enough room for the center container to fit without causing the mixture to overflow.
An added bonus of using recycled materials is that you won't have to worry about keeping them intact. It was far easier for the hosts to rip the orange juice pint off of the concrete than it would have been for them to shimmy it out of a plastic container.
The design they've come up with calls for a diagonal covering across the width of the pot. TheSorryGirls decided to go with a chalkboard paint because of its matte finish, but if you're planning on storing herbs in these pots, this paint will be perfect for labeling them.
After the paint is dried, these pots will be good to go. You can fill them with potting soil, and then they'll be ready for your favorite herbs or succulents.
As good as they looked when they were empty, these pots look even better filled. Check out the clip from TheSorryGirls below to see some more angles of the finished project!
