Play water tennis
Homestructions recommends using your family-friendly ball to keep your pool a little cleaner. Tennis balls can help clean oils and lotions out of your water. When friends and family jump into the pool wearing sunscreen, some of the cream gets left behind. The tennis ball will soak up that extra solution from the water.
Remove surface floaties
Check your pool every few days for leaves and other debris on the surface of the water. It's much easier to pull things out before they sink. Early intervention may mean less work later on.
Check pH Levels yourself
Maintaining proper pH levels is essential for swimmer health. Easy to use strips make testing a snap. Simply dip them in the water to make sure the level is kosher. If not, make adjustments as needed.
Maintain pH levels with baking soda
You can use baking soda to keep normal pH levels. It's  much cheaper than products pool cleaners sell and does the job just as well. You'll need to do a bit of research to determine how much you need for your pool.
Check for leaks
Fill a bucket about 3/4 of the way full with water. Mark the waterline on the bucket. Place the bucket in the pool and mark where the water rests on the outside of the bucket. Allow your bucket to float for at least two or three days. You have a leak in the pool if the water in the pool has gone down more than the water in the bucket. If water loss is the same, you can thank evaporation (and your lucky stars), according to How Stuff Works.
Use a solar cover
Save money on your electric bill by placing a solar cover on your pool. This keeps the water a bit warmer without adding the extra expense of heating a pool full of water.
