See how to crochet the harlequin stitch (video & diagram)

The harlequin stitch is a great technique for a project where you want to show off your crochet skills (like a baby shower or wedding gift, perhaps). While this stitch looks complicated, there are several variations that are a little easier. You should be familiar with single crochets, double crochets, and crochet-togethers.
This stitch can look like flat zigzags or have a more starburst appearance depending on which pattern you choose to follow.

A nice clutch or a beautiful Afghan are just a couple of examples of what you can do with the harlequin stitch.
Because this pattern is worked in rows it is easy to change colors as often as you'd like, according to Fine Craft Guild. Most of the patterns switch every row so that the pattern is a little more visible. Though you could also opt for every other row.
This pattern has two base rows and then a repeating three-row pattern until you reach the end.
Your foundation chain can be as long as you like (depending on how wide you want your project to be), but should be a multiple of 8 chain. For your first row: chain one then skip the first four chains and insert your hook into the fifth chain. You'll work nine double crochets into this fifth stitch.
Skip the next three chains, add a single crochet into the fourth stitch. Skip three more chains and add nine double chains into the fourth stitch. Skip three more and do a single crochet into the fourth. Repeat until you get to the end of the row.
When you reach the end of your first row, skip the last three stitches and add a single crochet into the last chain of row. (You can change colors here if you'd like or at the end of any row after this point.) Chain three and turn.
For this second row, you'll do four double crochets together over the next four stitches. Note: Do not complete any of the double crochets until you get the the last double crochet. Chain four and then work a single crochet into the next stitch. Chain three. Work nine double crochets together over the next nine stitches. Chain four, add a single crochet into the next stitch. Chain three. Repeat the same pattern (nine double crochets, chain 4, single crochet, chain three etc.)
When you reach the last shell, you'll end the row with five double crochets together.
To see how the rest of this pattern is done, check out Wooly Wonders Crochet video. (The three rows shown in the video are the rows you'll repeat until you are almost finished with your project).
While this pattern does take a lot of time, the results are stunning. You can combine any color pallet you like and it makes a perfect gift. Try using this technique on scarves for cozy winter wear.
