How to crochet the diamond mesh stitch (video tutorial & diagram)

The diamond crochet mesh stitch is a pretty way to create a delicate pattern for a lot of projects. This pattern works really well on purses, hats, shawls and even some blankets. Note, that because the mesh pattern uses empty space as much as yarn for design effect, the items you create aren't going to be particularly warm, but they will be stunning.
The best part about this pattern is that it's easy. All you really need to know is how to do the single crochet and chain stitch.

Once you nail the pattern, you can use it to add detail to shirts (or flip flops). The sweet pattern is a great way to practice your single crochet chains and loops too.
Numei offers a simple pattern for the beautiful shawl below. The delicate pattern would look beautiful in any color.
This particular pattern is the traditional mesh stitch, though you could also opt for an offset mesh stitch or a trellis stitch, a variation on the mesh stitch, according to Crochet Basics.
You can use any yarn you want. A thicker yarn will give you more plush, but a thinner yarn will look more delicate and may be a bit easier to manipulate. For a scarf or shawl, try a medium thickness to get delicacy and a bit more warmth.
The foundation row of this stitch starts with a multiple of four plus three. The pattern is largely chain five, skip and chain and single chain, repeated through most of the project. The video below gives you a bit more detail on how to continue the pattern through to the end.
You can add flair to the project by adding loose ends for a unique scarf, or create a small bag to use when you hit the farmers market. If you use cotton yarn, your project will be machine washable, and the mesh pattern provides plenty of air circulation for fresh fruits and veggies.
This stitch is not only great for beginners, but it's also a great stitch to use for a quick project when you don't have a lot of time to spare. Once you get the pattern down, you can move quickly through the rest of your work.
