Learn how to crochet the diamond eyelet stitch (video & written instructions)

This lovely, lacy stitch is perfect for an airy shawl or cozy bedcover, and absolutely ideal as a baby blanket.
Although it looks impossibly dainty, it's not that hard to create, as you'll see, and it only uses two of the easiest stitches around, the double crochet and the chain. Like magic, these humble stitches build up to a breathtaking pattern.

The diamond stitch is built up by creating spaces which stack up gradually, row by row, to form a diamond shape.
While the stitches used to make up the pattern are not complicated at all, you will need to count your stitches carefully. The pattern is built up across ten rows.
Start off by chaining a foundation chain in your desired length, using multiples of 14, plus 1 for your turning chain.
First row
Double crochet into all the chains from the row before, checking that you have multiples of 14, plus one extra chain which was your turning chain.
Second row
In your second row, you will start off by chaining three, which forms a double crochet. Next, you will chain two more, and skip two double crochets from the previous row. Double crochet into the third stitch, and then double crochet into the next eight stitches as well. Now chain two and skip the next two double crochets from the previous row. Then double crochet one. The pattern now repeats, so chain two, miss two double crochets, double crochet into the third stitch and the next eight stitches along, then chain two again and skip two double crochets. Then double crochet one. You will notice that you are starting to make a pattern with two spaces (separated by chains) interspersed with blocks of double crochet.
Third row
You'll start the third row by chaining three, to represent a first double crochet. Then do a second double crochet, then chain two to make a space. Skip one chain from the row below and also skip one double crochet. Then you'll double crochet into the next seven stitches. Chain two and skip one double crochet and one chain, then double crochet into the next three stitches. This is your pattern for this row, so repeat until you get to the end.
Fourth row
In your fourth row, you'll start off chaining three to represent a double crochet, then do two more double crochets. Now chain two and skip a chain and a double crochet from the previous row. Then double crochet five times, then chain two and skip one double crochet and a chain from the row below. Then you'll double crochet five more times and repeat this until the end of the row.
Fifth row
Chain three first of all to represent a double crochet. Then double crochet three times. Chain two and skip a chain and a double crochet. Then double crochet three times. Chain two and skip a double crochet and a chain. Then seven double crochets finish the pattern. Repeat this until the end of the row. You'll be noticing that you are forming diamonds above and below by varying the size of the gaps inside and outside the chain spaces.
Sixth row
We start off the sixth row with three chains for your first double crochet. Then double crochet twice more. Now chain two and miss the next chain and double crochet from row five. Double crochet one stitch, then chain two and miss out one double crochet and a chain. Now finish the pattern with nine double crochets. You'll repeat this until the end of the row.
Seventh row
Start with three chains as your double crochet, then three double crochets, chain two and skip a double crochet and a chain, then three double crochets. Now chain two again and skip a double crochet and a chain, then double crochet seven times. Repeat this to the end of the row.
Eighth row
For this row, chain three, then double crochet twice, chain two and skip one double crochet and a chain, then five double crochets, chain two and skip a chain and a double crochet, then five double crochets. This is your pattern, which you should repeat till the end of the row.
Ninth row
Now you will chain three, then double crochet twice, chain two and skip one double crochet and a chain, then double crochet seven times, chain two and skip one chain and a double crochet, then double crochet three times. Repeat until you reach the end.
Tenth row
Starting with your chain three as usual, you will then chain two, skip one double crochet and a chain, then double crochet nine times, chain two and skip one chain and a double crochet, double crochet one stitch, then repeat the pattern again until the row is completed.
This is your basic diamond stitch pattern, and you can now create whatever you like with this beautiful, delicate lace-like stitch.
