As you'll see from our tutorial from the Crochet Crowd, you can use any size bauble for this project - just adjust the number of chains you are using. In this case, the bauble is a standard 3.5 inch one, made of plastic. You can use glass baubles but, of course, watch out as they are very fragile.
Choose a nice thin yarn to get a delicate effect. Fingering weight or fine yarn works well. Select an appropriate hook, either by consulting the yarn band or by trying a few chains and getting a size of stitch you like.
Written instructions for crochet thread baubles
Abbreviations: chain, ch. Double crochet, dc. Slip stitch, sl st.
Create a slip knot and chain eight, slip stitch to make a circle. Now 3ch and then 19dc all around the circle, sl st the circle together. Now *ch 4, skip next dc, sc in the next dc. Repeat again from * all the way around with sl st at the end bottom of the first ch 4.
*Ch5, sc in the ch 4 space, repeat from * around to the end. Finish with a sl st at the end of the bottom of the ch 5 spot.
Ch1, then * 3sc in the same spot as the ch 5 space, then chain 9. Repeat from * all the way around. Fasten off.
Cast on again in the middle of the ch 9 Space. 1 sc, then * ch 9 and sc in the middle of the next ch 9 Space. Repeat from * all the way around. Sl st in the initial cast on space.
Continue by putting 12 sc in the ch 9 space - you will find it tricky to get 12 sc in but it will work! Then *12 sc in the next ch 9. Repeat all the way around. Sl st in the starting sc.
Sl st to the 6th sc, then * ch 15 and then sc to the next 6th sc of the next space. Repeat from * all the way around.
If you are using a smaller bauble, you will need to chain fewer stitches, between 5 to 15. Fewer chains will make the lace thread tighter around the ball. You may have to use trial and error to get the best fit. Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Thread a string through all the 10 loops. Wrap around your bauble, pull tight and secure at the top. Festive ribbon, thicker yarn or even some gift wrap thread can look really attractive as a finishing touch.
