Join-as-you-go crochet is a technique for linking up granny squares or other motifs that you are making into a larger project.

Materials
Any weight yarn. I use worsted weight in the video above.
Crochet hook size appropriate for the yarn you use. I use a 5mm hook.

Pro Tip: Use a contrasting yarn color for the joining granny stitches that makes your borders and squares stand out from each other.
Pro Tip: You can use this method with different types of granny squares, but the easiest way to try it out is with simple, traditional granny squares like the ones in the video.

Written Pattern
1st square: Work granny stitches around the first square in your joining color. Bky and weave ends.
2nd square: Join your joining color yarn to any corner of your next granny square, Ch 3, 2 Dc in corner, Ch 3, 3 Dc in corner, Ch 1, 3 Dc in next sp, Ch 1, 3 Dc in corner sp, Ch 1, sl st into corner sp from 1st square, Ch 1, 3 Dc into corner sp from 2nd square, sl st into ch sp from 1st square, 3 Dc in ch sp from 2nd square, sl st into ch sp from 1st square, 3 Dc in corner sp, Ch 1, sl st into corner sp of 1st square, 3 Dc in corner of 2nd square, continue granny sts along 2nd square, sl st to join to 1st Dc of the round, bky, weave ends.
3rd square: Follow 2nd square method.
4th square (joining down 2 sides): Follow 2nd square method beginning on the right side of the opening (see video above). When you get to the center corner, 3 Dc in corner of 4th square, Ch 1, sl st into corner sp from 3rd & 2nd squares, sl st into corner sp from 1st square, 3 Dc in corner sp of 4th square, continue with 2nd square method to finish, bky, weave ends.
