5 fabulous finishing techniques to perfect your crochet

Finished a project that's taken months - only to be disappointed by the end result? Don't worry, there are ways to spruce up your work so that you'll be proud of every stitch.
From perfecting raggedy ends to adding borders, these tips will have your work looking tip-top.
1. Fringe benefits
If your scarf is looking a little crooked, why not add a fringe? The added yarn will draw the eye away from the edge of your work and disguise any wonky edges, and also gives a dramatic touch you'll love. See how to do it here.

2. Get edgy
Often a blanket or afghan doesn't really seem finished until you've added a border. A border can add huge amounts of interest to a project, or can be a relatively simple frame for your work. Whether your taste runs to rows of bobbles or a clean line of single crochet, you'll find something that works for you here.
Or if you are feeling fancy, here's a more fancy edge. Check out this awesome treble scallop edge. Tutorial here.
3. Add applique
If you've made a hat or a scarf and - heaven forfend - you notice a hole in your stitching, don't despair and unravel the lot. Often you can disguise mistakes with a judiciously placed applique flower. These also look great as buttons or brooches to jazz up plain outfits and coats and are quick to make, as you'll see here.
4. Just join in
Sometimes the way you join your squares or pieces of crochet to construct a project can add to the final look - and sometimes you want the hems to be as unobtrusive as possible. Have a look here at plenty of techniques you'll want to try.
5. Go round the block
Blocking is one of the least popular, yet most successful techniques to raise the end result of your crochet. If your squares have turned out different sizes, if there are lumps and bumps in your work or if you've got a lop-sided edge to a blanket, then blocking can sort the problem out. It takes time and space, and can be fiddly, but as you'll see here, it can work wonders.
