1. Always wind your skeins
Skeins of yarn look so free-flowing and orderly when you start your work - but a couple of pulls later, and you'll have a nasty mess on the end of your hook. Always take the time to wind your skeins into balls before you start. You don't need fancy equipment for this (though you can certainly find it if you want it), just a willing pair of hands, a chair back, or even an open laptop that you can loop the skein over.
2. Centre pull yarn ball
Many crocheters swear by having a centre pull yarn ball to stop those pesky hold-ups. Here's one way to create one, using an empty kitchen roll tube and plenty of ingenuity:
3. Use a bag or bottle
A popular solution to the tangle problem is a humble ziploc bag. Either make a small hole for your yarn and pop the ball inside, or allow the yarn to come out of the bag closure. Equally nifty, and also costing you nothing, how about popping your skein into an empty soda bottle like this:
4. Choose a colander
If you're working with more than one yarn at once, and you also need a handy container to transport your skeins, why not try a colander? Those handy little holes are just the right size for the yarn to poke through, and besides, it looks really cute too.

5. Mason jar yarn tidy
Another super-cute idea that'll have your house looking gorgeously crafty is the mason jar yarn tidy. Simply make a hole in the top of the lid, stick your yarn through and off you go - no tangles and lots of stylishness.
6. Baby wipe dispenser
Another great solution to the snagging problem is to put your skein or ball of yarn into an empty wipes dispenser. The yarn is neatly tidied away with the free end flowing nicely. Perfect!
