6 best ways to make a slip knot

It's literally the basis of every piece of crochet you create, but do you know the best way to make a humble slip knot?
There are many methods out there, and our definitive guide finds the best ones for you to try.
1. Loop, pinch, pull
For this method, first pull up your yarn into a U-shaped loop. Then put two fingers inside the loop, while the other hand holds the ends. With the fingers in the loop, grab the free yarn and pull the middle of it through. Now you have a loop inside your loop. Pull the tail of the yarn to tighten.

2. Two loops
Take the tail of your yarn and fold it over its free end, creating a loop. Hold this loop at the point where the yarns cross. Now make a second loop further along the yarn and feed it through the first. Tighten up by pulling the tail.
3. Hook and loop
Wrap the yarn loosely around your finger. Now slide your crochet hook under the loop. Twist the hook to secure the loop. Now wrap the free yarn around the hook and draw it through the loop.
4. 'Pretzel' technique
Crochet guru has a great tutorial on the 'pretzel' slipknot technique:
5. Flat hooking method
To make a slip knot this way, lay your yarn down and form it into a loop, then take your crochet hook to grab the back of the loop and pull it through. This is a lovely simple method.

6. Wrap around
I find the easiest way to make a slip knot is to wrap the yarn round my finger, then take it off and poke a loop through the gap. Hey presto, you're ready to crochet!
