Baby diapers are not exactly the thing people want to handle especially used ones which is understandable. Unfortunately, it is the used ones that display the science as to why disposable diapers even work. The stuff that is inside of a baby diaper that absorbs the liquid from bodily excretions is called a polymer. This polymer is science expressed in everyday life.
Check out these 6 experiments that use a baby diaper and see some of the cool things polymers can do.

1. The baby diaper experiment ( h/t SickScience)
This experiment is very interesting. It will show you several different physical and chemical reactions that take place during the experiment. Follow the directions from beginning to end, and learn more about how and why polymers work.
2. Which diaper holds more? ( h/t KarleeHolden)
This is not typically something that most children are concerned with even if they have younger siblings. However, this is a great experiment to test absorbency. All the diapers claim to have the best absorbency and keep babies “dry the longest”. Now you can do your own test and see which brand actually has the best absorbency. Check out the differences in the various brands and see if you can tell why one does or does not absorb as well as the others.
3. Instant snow experiment ( h/t Hacker007)
Winter in the summertime? Snow at the beach? It may sound impossible but it is not. With water, the stuffing inside of a diaper, and a bowl you can take snow with you wherever you go. This experiment will show what happens when you add a certain amount of water to the polymer. Watch the video to see how Hacker 007 makes snow that he can use anytime he gets ready for a winter wonderland.
4. Amazing snow rainbow experiment ( h/t LuckyPennyShop)
The previous experiment showed how to create instant snow. This experiment takes that instant snow and makes a work of art. When you watch the video you will see how the experimenter uses the same principles of creating instant snow and makes a rainbow using food coloring. He also has a pretty cool contraption that allows the colors of the rainbow to all grow at the same time.
5. Salt in the game experiment ( h/t TheScienceCrew)
This is another experiment dealing with the polymer inside of the diaper, but these experimenters put a twist on the experiment by adding salt to their mixture. Is salt enough to change what happens with the polymers? You have to watch the experiment to find out.
6. Engineering of a Disposable Diaper ( h/t Engineerguy)
In this video, you will learn more about polymers and why diapers work, than in the other videos. The Engineer Guy really takes time to break down why some diapers work better than others, and how the entire process of absorption works. Toward the end of the video, you will see how he test his theories, and you may be able to give it a try at home. Watching this video first may help with explaining how all these experiments work.
