Experiment with science and make your own kinetic sand (+6 experiments)

Kinetic Sand is a combination of regular sand and polydimethylsiloxane (simply identified as PDMS). When the two are mixed together it creates sand that always appears moist and pliable.
We found 6 kinetic sand experiments that teach you more about kinetic sand, what it is and how much fun science can truly be.

1. Motion sand (h/t SpanglerScienceTV)
Steve Spangler is a well-known scientist for children and people who may not know much about how different things in science work. In this video, he shows two television hosts how to make a motion or kinetic sand. There are a lot of ingredients, so make sure you pay close attention to what materials he uses and how much of each, and you too can make your own motion sand.
2. 3-Layered kinetic sand colored cake (h/t AWESMR kids)
Kinetic sand is a scientific phenomenon that you can have a lot of fun with. As you will see in the video, the experimenter is having all sorts of fun with the kinetic sand, and you can too. Watch the video to see all the cool things he does with the kinetic sand, and once you know what you are doing, you can throw in a few of your idea too!
3. Giant kinetic sand rainbow cube (h/t Rainbow Learning)
The best thing about science is that it can help teach children of all ages, even those who are very young. In this experiment, you will have to make large perfect cubes with the connect sand and arrange them in a Rubik cube type of format. Once it is complete it is a fun teaching tool for anyone learning their colors and shapes. The video also shows you how to make other shapes with kinetic sand.
4. How to make kinetic sand (h/t The Patsy Family)
In this video, you will see a daddy and daughter experiment team create their own kinetic sand at home using four ingredients. This is something you and the adult in your life could try at home with very little mess. Work along with the video, or watch it in its entirety first, it doesn’t matter. This one is pretty easy to follow.
5. Kinetic sand and gallium experiment (h/t Sand Tagious)
In this experiment, you will learn what happens when you mix kinetic sand and gallium which is a form of liquid metal. The results may shock you. Write do what you hypnotize will happen when this two come together, and then watch the video to see if you were right.
6. Kinetic sand in a vacuum chamber (h/t The Action Lab)
It may seem fairly obvious what will happen when you put kinetic sand into a vacuum chamber like the sand will dry out. After doing this experiment, even the experimenter was shocked by the results. Watch the video in full before giving it a try yourself, and see who wins when it’s kinetic sand versus the vacuum chamber.
