Anyone can point and shoot a camera, and call themselves a photographer. Fine art photography is a special type of photography that takes skill and practice to master. Conceptual/fine art photography is an art and here are some things you should know.
Conceptual and fine art photography is much more than taking a pretty picture. It takes planning to come up with a piece of photography and calling it art. Below are some things to think about when getting into fine art photography.

1. Equipment
Nowadays, any camera and many smartphone cameras, can take quality pictures. Unless you are taking only underwater photos or photos in small areas, a DSLR should work fine. Its more about what the artist does with the equipment that the equipment itself.
2. Vision
You need to have a plan before you start shooting your fine art photos. What do you envision creating? Lay out some groundwork and then shoot some photos to start the process.
3. Idea
What is the overall idea of your piece? Start by thinking of a word or phrase and interpreting it through a series of photographs. You may even want to go back to your vision and see if your beginning photographs line up with your idea.
4. Technique
How are you planning on putting your composition or series of photographs together? Is there an art photographer you love and want to follow their technique? Look at other art photographers works and take note on how their pieces are similar. In the beginning, its okay to imitate others until you formulate your own techniques.
5. Work
Once you have all the other steps in place, you should be able to produce a series of photographs with similar themes and techniques. You want enough of these so that you can display them at a show when given the chance.

6. Artist Statement
Want your viewers to do know why and how you created your photographs? Write out a well though out artist statement. Look at other artists' statements if you are not sure what to say. You want to give your admirers an idea of why you do what you do.
