6+ tips to follow for planting strawberries in a planter

You can grow strawberries in all sorts of containers. They are adaptable to pots, hanging baskets, and other types of planters. The plants will cascade over the sides of the container and the fruit will hang below it. As long as they get plenty of sun and water, the strawberries will thrive.
However, if you have enough space, the best way to grow strawberries is in a raised planter located near your house. You will have more control over the environment, so you can create the perfect growing conditions for your plants.

Follow these tips and your strawberry plants should bear fruit for years:
1. Pick a sunny spot
Strawberries need at least 8 hours of sunlight a day to get the best flavor from them. They won’t do well planted under trees or in locations that face north. Although they like the sun, plant them early in the morning or late in the day so the plants aren’t exposed to a scorching sun right away.
2. Start with good soil
It doesn't matter what kind of soil you have now. You'll be bringing in fresh topsoil and compost to use on top of the existing soil. A slightly acidic soil (pH between 5.5 and 6.8) will grow the best strawberries.

3. Pick your type
There are four common types of strawberry plants from which to choose. Where you live will have some influence on your choice:
Summer-bearing: Provides a large crop at one time
Everbearing: Produces fruit throughout the year
Day Neutral: Requires temperatures between 35 and 85 degrees but are not dependent on the length of the day
Alpine: Provides sweetness for making jams and jellies

4. Give them room to grow
Most plants produce runners from which new plants are formed. It's best to plant them about 18 inches apart. This will give them plenty of room to spread. Make sure the crown of the plant is exposed to light and air so that it doesn't rot.

5. Water and mulch
Keep your plants well-watered, but don't drown them. Their shallow roots dislike soggy soil. Keep the water off the fruit so it doesn't rot. Place mulch around them to retain moisture and keep your plants clean. Practically any type of mulch works fine.

6. Pick them in the morning
It's recommended to pick strawberries in the morning when the fruit is still cool. You can put them right into the refrigerator. They also freeze well. Remember to rinse your strawberries with cool water before you use them.
