How to make a DIY mosaic brick planter

In a recent post on Hometalk, landscaping expert Kathi of Los Alamitos, California, reveals her DIY mosaic brick planter. Not only is this yard project gorgeous, but its true beauty lies in the details: Kathi set actual family heirlooms into her DIY "bricks," making this outdoor fixture truly "her own." In fact, a normal brick planter will just never seem as special once you see how wonderfully personalized you can make your yard.
It seems that other folks are flocking to this idea too: the mosaic brick planter is one of Kathi's most popular posts, with 95,000 views.

To make a mosaic brick planter, you will need small tiles, jewelry, shells, pebbles, beads, glass stones and other found objects. The project also requires 2 large nails, food storage containers, Petroleum Jelly or cooking spray, mortar, bricks, string, and spray paint.
To make the mosaic, dig a trench and lay a base with bricks. Make your mosaic molds using recycled food storage containers, Petroleum Jelly, and your decorative objects. Lay the decorative bricks in a prepared circle and then you are ready to plant!

Kathi's own project is particularly sweet given her use of rings from her mother-in-law, Eloise, set into the bricks.
As you can see, the most attractive element of this project is the level of customization. If you have young children, impress their hands into the mortar for a lasting and loving memory of their youth. Next time you are on holiday at the beach, pick up shells and use them in your decorative bricks as mementos of your favorite vacation spot. You can also make patterns out of your family members' birthstones. The options are endless.
