Turning a one-car garage into a family room

Roxanne and her husband John found themselves running out of space as their two daughters got older. Their 1200 square foot home in New Jersey, which Roxanne deemed "small builder grade," just wasn't cutting it anymore, she explained on her blog, The Honeycomb Home. After plenty of pestering, Roxanne's husband gave in and agreed to convert their one-car garage into a family room.
"I would say from start to finish this project took us about 2 years or more," the mother of two explained on her blog, "We worked on it as time/budget allowed." The family received help from John's brother as well as a cousin who so happened to be a carpenter. Before long, their barren garage became a thing of beauty for the whole family to enjoy.

To make their dream a reality, John and Roxanne had a lot of work to do. They had to install a window, insulation, heat vents, lighting, and more. Roxanne said she always wanted the focus of the room to be the fireplace.
Then came the planks. With the help of his brother, John covered the wall which previously acted as the garage door. Once that was done, they added a mantle and were finally able to furnish the room.
