Every home has that one piece of furniture that has passed its prime and probably needs to be discarded. However, why throw away an old piece of furniture when you can transform it into something that's both beautiful and functional? Charlotte Smith, a contributor for eHow, demonstrates this perfectly by turning an old coffee table into a unique woven bench.
Save yourself a trip to the landfill! Furniture that's cosmetically damaged but structurally intact can still be of use -- with a little bit of time and work they can be completely transformed into something new. Let's get started!
The materials you'll need for this project depend on what kind of furniture you're transforming, but in order to follow Smith's instructions you'll need a table with a removable top. A table with an insert for a removable glass top would work perfectly.
You'll also need something to make the bench seat's netting. Smith uses long nylon cords.
Smith begins by burning the edges of the nylon so they don't unravel. She then secures the cords to the table and meshes them together, creating a tight "net" that is strong enough to be used as a bench.
Smith outlines in-depth instructions for creating the nylon mesh on her full writeup on eHow.
The finished product is fun and casual, like something that would be found on a school's playground. The color of the bench is entirely up to the builder, because nylon comes in virtually every color. If necessary, the coffee table can even be repainted to match outdoor paint, as in the photo above.
If you don't have a table with a large hollow section, don't fear! Some DIY experts on YouTube have figured out that benches can be made from pretty much any coffee table using some foam padding and fabric.
Make sure your coffee table is strong enough to support being sat on before you begin! Nothing ruins a good day of DIY construction like a final product that immediately breaks.
