Learn how to create a gorgeous crocheted rug with old T-shirts

When most people think of crochet, old t-shirts are not the traditional material of choice, but maybe it should be! This fun crochet rug project is not only simple, it's also a great way to save a bundle on a new rug for your living room! As an added bonus, you can clear a little extra space in your closet for new t-shirts!
If you have a few old (100 percent cotton) t-shirts on hand this rug will cost little more than your time. It's better to choose shirts that have little or no print on them and shirts that are of a similar weight for more consistency. Of course, if you want a unique pattern, try a heavily patterned shirt.

If you have a few old (100 percent cotton) t-shirts on hand this rug will cost little more than your time. Choose shirts that have little or no print on them and shirts that are of a similar weight for more consistency. Of course, if you want a unique pattern, try a heavily patterned shirt.
Craftsy recommends trying different widths (one or two inch strips) to see what you like. They also recommend choosing a seamless t-shirt to avoid bumps in the yarn later on.
Once you have your stack of t-shirts, check out this Instructables step-by-step demonstration for how to cut the shirt into a yarn material you can use for your rug. Once your yarn is completely cut, you'll need to roll it into a ball (be careful not to twist it) to provide enough tension during the crocheting steps.
Next: Put on your creative hat and start crocheting your little heart out. Try a single crochet and the Chain 2 method. You can check the video below for a step-by-step demonstration.
Use a larger needle for bigger stitches. Begin your initial row with 6 single crochet stitches. Row two single crochets in each stitch (for a total of 12). On row three alternate between one single crochet and two single crochets in each stitch. Continue until your carpet is complete.
As a note, alter where you begin adding your extra stitches to keep the circle from look more like an oval.
If a round rug isn't your style, T-Shirt Yarn details how to do a square rug instead. Craftsy recommends using this yard to make other projects like a shoulder wrap or scarf.
