Learn how to tackle the versatile bobble stitch

The bobble stitch is a fun crochet technique that lets you add volume to any project. The bubble form makes it a great option for potholders or blankets, but you can also use it to create charming purses and floor mats, or add details to hats and booties.
B. Hooked, notes that this technique is simple so it's a good choice for all levels (including beginners!). The end result looks fancy, but the footwork needed isn't that complicated.

Because this stitch is so flexible, you can start with any yarn and hook that you have on hand. So pull out some leftover yarn and get to practicing!
This stitch starts out with a slip knot. Then you'll create a chain that is an odd number long plus one. (For example, 35, plus one chain). As you move onto your foundation row, skip the first chain closest to the hook and add a single crochet into the rest of the chains all the way to the end of the row.
To begin row two, chain three and turn. Find the last single crochet you made, and double crochet four into the first stitch. Single crochet the next stitch, then make five double chains in the next chain, and a single crochet in the chain after that. Repeat until the end of the row.
Chain 1 to start your third row and add a single crochet into each stitch all the way down the row. Repeat the patterns for rows two and three until you are finished. Your project should end with a bobble stitch or an even numbered single stitch row.
Once you master the basic technique, you can turn this stitch into unique gifts and projects (like this adorable lamb in the photo below!).
Another technique to try is to use the bobble stitch as an added texture element on flatter surface. It's a great way to add details to blankets, hats and scarves.
If you're feeling particularly crafty, try out one of these adorable purses! They make great gifts or you can put one together to match an outfit for a night out on the town.
You can save a bundle on new throw pillows and still show off your design flare, using the bobble (or puff) stitch to create charming pillows for your bed or couch.
