How to crochet the blanket stitch (video tutorial)

If you want to make a blanket but you are new to crochet, you may feel a bit overwhelmed. While there are plenty of blanket patterns that are complicated, this pattern is simple and pretty easy for beginners to tackle. You can add extra flair to your design by swapping colors in the middle of your project.
While the stitch style lends itself to blankets (rather obviously), you could also use this stitch to create a sweater or a purse once you become more comfortable creating projects.

One of the best things about this stitch is that it's pretty tight, which means the blanket (or scarf) will be warmer than if you'd used a mesh stitch. Use this pattern to create the perfect gift for family, friends or the new baby.
Comments on the video below showed that even beginning crocheters had luck with this stitch. "I made this blanket ... so simple to make. It literally took me about 3 hours from start to finish, and that's being a novice," April Dawson wrote.
If you know how to do a slip stitch and a double crochet, you should be able to tackle this simple project. While this video calls for a chain of 42 across, Rescued Paw Designs' Pattern calls for 66 and The Crochet Spot suggests any number that is a multiple of three. Each of the patterns looks a bit different, so just choose the one you like the most.
