Working with multiple strands creates a chunky feel to the end product and mimics the appearance of working with variegated yarn. Of course, doubling or tripling the strands of yarn you're crocheting means that you are doubling or tripling the amount of overall yarn you will need for your project. Generally, you will want to use a larger hook for multiple strands as well (like this one, available here). For a great "how-to" video, check out our tutorial above.
What can you do with this technique?
Using multiple strands of yarn is great for making anything "chunky." House of Esperanza uses a mixture of gray, yellow and white to create the great baby afghan shown below.
Aesthetic Nest combines different colors for another baby afghan but mentions that the technique can be used to make a baby hat or scarf, too.
Susan's Hippie Crochet gives instructions for making a chunky bowl, great for holding toys or balls of yarn.
However you choose to put your colors together, the end result of any crochet job completed with multiple strands of yarn will give leave you satisfied. You can easily create most any style of afghan you desire. Staying trendy with crochet may simply mean adding in an extra strand or two of yarn.
