Watch how to crochet the suzette stitch (video tutorial & written instructions)

If you've mastered the basics of crochet, but want to move on to something with a dash of sophistication, then look no further than the suzette stitch.
The suzette stitch, with a closely-woven, pretty texture, adds intricacy to scarves, blankets, and bags but is created using only two of the most common stitches.

How to crochet the suzette stitch video tutorial:
This great video tutorial from Jess at the Make and Do Crew explains the stitch beautifully. Jess describes it as the perfect 'fancy' stitch for beginners and it's easy to see why. A simple combination of double and single crochet, it builds up quickly and easily.

How to crochet the suzette stitch written instructions:
To start off the suzette stitch, you'll need an odd number of chains as your foundation. Now put a single crochet and a double crochet into the second chain from your hook. Skip the next chain, and put a single and a double crochet into the next stitch along. Continue this pattern until the last stitch of the row, into which you'll put a single crochet. Chain one and turn.
In the second row, you will put a single and double crochet into each single crochet from the row before. So skip all the double crochets, but single and double crochet into the single crochets. Don't forget to put one single crochet into the last stitch of the row. And it's as simple as that - as you'll see, the pattern builds beautifully.
What can you make with the suzette stitch?
You can use the Suzette for baby blankets, rugs or even more hard-wearing items like bags. If you're looking for heavy-duty use, choose a good chunky, robust yarn and large crochet hook, following the suggestions on your yarn band for size.
