Wedge stitch written instructions
The wedge stitch is built up from the following stitches: chain, single crochet, double crochet, half double crochet, triple crochet, double treble crochet and a wedged picot. For each wedged picot (WP) you will work 6ch, 1sc into 2nd ch from hook, 1 hdc into next ch, 1dc into next ch, 1 tr into next ch, 1 dtr into next ch.
Start off by crocheting a foundation chain in multiples of six, plus one. This should be long enough for your project.
Row one
1sc into 2nd ch from hook, *1WP, skip 5ch, 1sc into next ch; rep from * to end, turn.
Row two
5ch (count as 1dtr), *1sc into top of WP, over next 5ch at underside of WP work 1sc into next ch, 1hdc into next ch, 1dc into next ch, 1tr into next ch, 1dtr into next ch, skip next sc; rep from * leaving out 1dtr at end of last rep when 2 sts remain, **(yo) 3 times, insert hook into last ch at underside of WP, yo, draw loop through, (yo, draw through 2 loops) 3 times, rep from ** into next sc, yo, draw through all 3 loops on hook, skip turning ch, turn.
Row three
1ch, 1sc into first st, *1WP, skip next 5 sts, 1sc into next st; rep from * ending last rep with 1 sc into top of tch, turn.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until your project is the length you want.
While this is a complicated stitch pattern, the individual stitches themselves are not hard to master. It creates a really stunning effect and crochets up quickly when you've got the hang of it. It makes spectacular throws and is glamorous used for a special scarf as well.
Top tip: this stitch looks lovely worked up in variegated yarn, as it brings out the changes of direction and emphasizes the separate wedges. Alternatively, change colors every two rows to give an impressive Argyll effect.
