How to crochet the popcorn stitch (video & written pattern)

The popcorn stitch is a beautiful crochet stitch with loads of texture and personality. It creates huge, raised bobbles in the fabric that add dimension to any crochet project.
You can use the popcorn stitch to make bumpy blankets, bags, pillows, and even scarves! This texture creates a unique look and lots of warmth.

Materials
Any weight yarn. I used worsted weight.
Corresponding hook size. I used an H 5mm hook.
Pro Tip: Stack your popcorn stitches as I do in my sample in the video, or get creative and play with staggering where the popcorn stitches are in each row once you are comfortable with the stitch.

Ch chain
St(s) stitch(es)
Sc single crochet
Dc double crochet
rep repeat
t turn
Pop st(s) popcorn stitch(es)
Special stitches involved in this pattern
Popcorn stitch
- 5 Dc in same st, remove hook loosening the loop, reinsert hook in the 1st Dc and through the loosened loop, pull through, Ch 1
Written Pattern
Ch any multiple of 2 +1 (I Ch 20+1), Sc in 2nd st from hook and across (20 sts)
Row 2: Sc in 1st st, Pop st, Sc in next, rep from * across
Row 3: Sc in each across (Sc in the tops of the Pop sts, not into each Dc within each Pop st) (20 sts)
Repeat rows 2 & 3 alternating until your fabric is as long as you like.
All odd number rows should have the same number of sts (i.e. if Row 3 has 20 sts, Row 25 should still have 20 sts)
