Directions
1. Check out the landscape supply stores for your pallets. Usually, you can find these for free. Clean off any excess dirt and grime from your pallet with a water hose and let dry. This is a good time to make sure there aren't any stray nails or staples left in your pallet. Use the claw side of your hammer to take and of these out.
2. Lay your pallet down on your workspace. Measure about an inch up from the notched part of the side brace on the pallet, and with a square ruler draw a line. Do this on all three notched braces. Go ahead and reserve three extra slats you are going to use later. Remove all extra metal and sand them as well.
3. Use a saw to cut where you marked your lines. Then, using heavy-grit sandpaper to start, sand the edges down, so everything is uniform. You want to remove any rough spots, and the finer grain sandpaper you use, the better finish you'll get.
4. Measure and cut two of the extra slats you pulled earlier to the same length as the pallet. The first one will go on the top of the pallet piece. Just a couple taps with a hammer will do, or if you have an air gun, it will go even faster.
5. Use a level to make sure the top slat is straight and plumb. If it's not level, you can fix it by adjusting your nails and either hammering them in a little harder in spots or use the claw end of your hammer to pull them out a little.
6. Flip your pallet sideways and measure the openings on the opposite side from your top slat. Take the other pallet slat you prepared earlier and cut it to match each of the openings. You want it to sit flush in the space, so be sure to measure accurately. Use finishing nails to attach the pieces securely.
7. Then, cut some small pieces the same width of your pallet and attach them to the corners using nails. Now, using the third extra slat you prepared earlier, measure spaces for your wine glasses and mark the measurements along the entire width of the pallet. Make sure your wine glasses will have room to hang.
8. Use a wood bit to make a hole on your marks. Cut straight from the edge of the pallet to the place where you made your hole to allow space for your wine glass stem to slide in. Be sure to check that it's wide enough with an actual wine glass you plan to display.
9. Now, put wood glue on the brackets you made on the edges, and nail the piece you just made with the wine slats to the corners. Sand everything one final time.
10. Hang your wine rack on your wall. Use wood screws and hang it on studs for added security. You don't want your wine and glasses to come crashing down.
Pro tip: When hanging your rack, use a stud finder to mark where your studs are so you create minimal damage to your drywall. Be sure to use screws that are long enough to grip deep into the studs. Use your level to be sure that you're hanging your wine rack properly.
