Binding tips video tutorial

One of the most challenging parts of creating a beautiful quilt is in putting the binding on properly. Getting the corners to miter correctly and the ends to join can cause extreme frustration to people who are just starting out quilting. Even seasoned quilters run into snags while trying to bind their quilts.
The Quilt Show seeks to help quilters conquer the binding issue with ease. According to its site, The Quilt Show was started in 2007 by Ricky Tims and Alex Anderson. In an effort to educate quilters, Tims and Anderson bring quilting professionals on their show and share tips and techniques with their viewers. The video below features Julie Cefalu as she shares how to get great corners on your binding and how to join the tails with a diagonal seam.

Cefalu states that she prefers to use a walking foot while doing the binding. When working with her binding, she does a number of "finger creases" rather than stopping and using an iron. This technique still gets the crease she needs and saves her time. She also demonstrates how to join the two ends of the binding in a simple, straightforward method. When she gets finished, her corners are beautifully mitered, and the binding tails meet perfectly.

Trying these tips will save you both time and frustration. Cefalu makes binding the quilt the least of your challenges in quilting, which means you can now enjoy every part of the process.
