How to make a 'jelly roll jam' quilt (video tutorial)

What comes to mind when you hear the words "jelly roll"? Do you think of a tasty pastry or a quilt? If the latter is what comes to mind, then you may be interested in learning how to make a jelly roll jam quilt. You can create a really playful design through the right choice of fabric.
Kimberly Jolly, from the Fat Quarter Shop, states that she started her quilting business as a side job to deliver high-quality goods and services to other quilters. She started the company in 2003 and has grown it from a part-time job to a full-time company. In the video below, Jolly walks viewers through the simple steps of creating a jelly roll jam quilt.

Jolly uses pre-cut jelly rolls for the project and picks out 18 strips of cloth. Since the roll she buys comes with 40 strips of cloth in it, she can make two, 36-inch, square quilts from one jelly roll. Once she has chosen her 18 strips, she divides them out into three sets of six and takes a picture of her sets just in case she gets interrupted. With a picture, she can easily remember the order in which she had her strips.
Jolly then proceeds to stitch the strips together, forming three sets of fabric. She states that she likes to use starch when sewing to help keep everything crisp, but that is up to each person's preference. From the three sets of fabric, she cuts her blocks which she then uses to create her quilt.

One time-saving tip Jolly shares is "chain stitching" the blocks together. This technique involves continuing the stitch of the fabric between blocks rather than cutting the thread. Besides saving time, this technique also saves thread. The next time you hear "jelly roll," you may envision a luscious quilt instead of a decadent breakfast treat.
