Watch how to knit the purl twist stitch (video & written pattern)

The purl twist stitch creates a wonderfully textured fabric. Depending on the type of yarn used and the gauge at which you knit it, this stitch can be used to make either a fabric that is sturdy without being stiff or one that has wonderful drape and visual interest.

This stitch is also unique because the pattern is actually created on the wrong side rows.

Materials

Abbreviations
k - knit
p - purl
p2tog - purl two stitches together

Written pattern
The purl twist is worked over an even number of stitches in a 4-row repeat. The right side rows are simply knit, while the purl twist is offset on alternating pattern rows.

Casting on an even number of stitches, begin Row 1 below on the right side of your knitting.
Rows 1 & 3: k to end of row
Row 2: *p2tog but do not drop the stitches off your left-hand needle, p the first stitch again and then drop both stitches off the needle; repeat from * to end of row
Row 4: p1, *p2tog but do not drop the stitches off your left-hand needle, p the first stitch again and then drop both stitches off the needle; repeat from * to end of row
