Watch how to crochet the thick fan stitch (video & written instructions)

It's called the thick fan stitch, but this crochet pattern produces a delicate, lacy effect that belies its chunky name.
The thick fan stitch works beautifully to create airy yet warm scarves or shawls and throws with a truly graceful drape.
Watch the thick fan stitch video tutorial:
The tutorial above uses a worsted weight yarn and an I or 5.5mm crochet hook, but you can choose any yarn you like to suit the project you have in mind. Have a look at the manufacturer's band on your yarn for hook size suggestions. You'll also need a pair of scissors and a tapestry needle to weave in your ends.
Pro tip: Try this stitch in a light and airy mohair mix for a really floaty summer scarf or shawl.

Written instructions
This pattern is created in multiples of five, so start by making a foundation ch in multiples of 5 sts, plus 2 as your turning ch.
Row 1: 1 sc into the 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in the next ch. *ch3, skip 2 ch, 1 sc in next 3 chs.* Rep to end of row, finishing with 1 sc in last 2 chs.
Row 2: ch1, 1sc into first st, *5dc in the ch3 sp. Sk 1 st. 1sc in next sc.* rep to end of row.
Row 3: ch6 ( 1dtr and ch1). Sk 1st st, but not the base of ch6, 1dc in each of the next 3 dcs, which should be centered over the 5dc group from the previous row, ch3. *Sk next 3 sts, 1dc in each of the next 3 dcs, ch3* repeat until you have 2 sts left. Now ch 1 and put 1dtr in last st.
Row 4: ch 3, 2dc in first ch1 space, *put 1sc in center dc, 5 dc in next ch 3 space* repeat until you reach last ch sp, now 2dc in the ch sp, 1dc in the 3rd ch of beginning ch6 from previous row.
Row 5: ch 1, 1sc in first 2 sts, *ch 3, skip 3 sts, 1sc in each of the next 3 sts * repeat until 2 sts left, sc into each.
Repeat this pattern until your project reaches the desired length.
