Watch how to crochet the fleur de lys stitch (video and written instructions)

The fleur de lys, a beautiful French symbol which stylises the lily, is center stage in this special crochet stitch.
The fleur de lys stitch makes lovely blankets, afghans and throws and would be gorgeous for a baby blanket. It looks best with two colors alternating, to bring out the details of the pattern. It's an intermediate level stitch using back post double crochet but, once you've got the hang of that, this pattern is not difficult to create.

Materials
You can use any yarn for this project, but as usual with an intricate stitch, avoid picking too chunky a yarn as it will make the final result look clumsy. A fingering weight or DK yarn would be ideal. Check the manufacturer's band for hook size suggestions. You'll also need a pair of scissors and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Yo and draw through a loop, bringing it through both sides of the fabric (3 loops on hook). Yo and draw through 2 loops on hook (2 loops remaining on hook).
