If you are going to spend the day at a sports event or other event where a lot of action will take place, you want to be ready to take shots in continuous mode. Here are some ways to help you get started.

1. Extra equipment
You want to bring extra equipment, such as batteries to the shoot. Taking continuous pictures will drain your battery quickly, so make sure you have extra batteries. You may want to plan out your shots and not take continuous ones all day to save your batteries.
2. Use sparingly
Many cameras have a limit on how many shots you can take in continuous mode. There are several things that can influence this amount, such as shooting in RAW or the size you are shooting in. Keep this in mind on the big day.
3. Focus
It takes practice to focus in on a moving subject. You can try to use the continuous focus feature on your camera and other tricks to keep the subject sharp. Take plenty of practice shots since this can be difficult to do at first.
4. Focus modes
You want to get familiar with the different focus modes on your camera since these will help keep your action shots sharp. Some cameras have three autofocus settings: One Shot, AI Servo, and AI Focus. For continuous mode, use AI Servo.
5. AF points
AF points come in Automatic selection and Manual selection. With manual, you choose the point. With automatic, the camera chooses the best place to focus, which may not be correct. Try out both to see which photo comes out sharper.
6. Action shots
You can take a variety of action shots in continuous mode. These shots can be of sporting events, portrait photos (especially children), and animals. Give yourself plenty of time to practice getting photos these photos sharp, especially if you are not used to using continuous mode.

You can capture plenty of expressions and positions when using continuous mode with portrait shoots. This is especially true when shooting children, who have a hard time staying still. Give the child a toy to play with, and shoot away. You will get many great candid shots this way, too.
