Add chalkboard paint to a log slice for a memo board with mountains of charm

Make a unique memo board to match your rustic decor. Transform a log slice into a chalkboard where you can draw outdoorsy doodles or write helpful reminders. Whether you hang it above a cabinet in the living room or next to the refrigerator in the kitchen, this chalkboard will have you pining for a trip to the mountains. Complete the look by writing a quote on it that recalls the charms of nature.
Part of the appeal of this chalkboard is the log slice’s oblong shape and distinctive bark. Select a log slice from a hobby shop or online marketplace with similar characteristics. Acacia has beautiful, highly textured bark; likewise, elm. Walnut is another option that's usually easy to find.

Instructions
1. Place the log slice on a work surface. Sand the top side of the slice with an electric sander and 80 grit sandpaper.
2. Switch out the 80 grit paper for the 220 grit paper. Sand the slice again until you have a smooth, even finish. Wipe away the dust with a paper towel.
3. Paint the sanded slice with chalkboard paint. Apply a thick but even coat. Leave about 1/2 inch of wood exposed around the rim of the slice. Allow the paint to dry.
4. Place the antlers stencil on top of the dried chalkboard paint. Hold the stencil in place with painter’s tape, then fill in the stencil with chalk. Remove the stencil.
5. Use flower stencils and chalk to add flowers to the chalkboard as desired.
6. Once you’ve finished your chalk art, hang the board on the wall and enjoy!
