Take a stab at this knife block project

Storing kitchen knives usually means a clunky block of wood on your kitchen counter with little wiggle room on which slot you can use for each knife. Instead of a generic knife block, make your own unique block with a few old books and hot glue. You can choose your favorite books or a series — just be sure they come from the same edition, so they're the same size.

For this project, you can choose either paperback or hardback books and any finish of wood for your base. We used twine as a decorative way to hold the books together and to add a touch of vintage flair. You can personalize your knife block any way you like. Enjoy showing off your love of the written word, even in the kitchen.

Materials
- Old books, at least 3 or 4
- Twine
- Scissors
- A block of finished wood
- Hot glue gun

Instructions
1. Stack the set of books you plan to use, lining up the edges as much as possible.

2. Cut a length of twine long enough to wrap around the stack of books a few times, and tie a bow.

3. In the middle section of the wood block that will serve as a base, apply a generous amount of hot glue. You want to apply enough glue, so every book in your stack will adhere to the wood without excess glue sneaking out from the side.

4. Stand the stack of books up in the glue on the wood, and press firmly until the glue dries. Slide your kitchen knives between the books or the pages of the books for a convenient way to store them while adding decoration to your kitchen.
