Create a holiday topiary from burlap in just minutes that's sure to add cheer

Part of the fun of the holiday season is the magical transformation of your home. As ornaments go up and lights begin to twinkle inside, walls and shelves become ornate testaments to the seasonal festivities to come. Topiaries have long been a staple of holiday décor. While there are many creative ways you can make this beautiful accessory, consider burlap, an often overlooked and underused fabric that results in an incredible topiary for the holidays.
It doesn’t take much more than a few foam cones, sewing pins and lengths of burlap ribbon to create a topiary that’s as fun as it is festive. This simple concept incorporates a charming rustic touch into holiday designs while an added silver star on top brings the shine. The burlap topiary can always stand alone on a shelf, but creating a set of two or three in varying sizes can add dimension and contrast. Place them among a collection of pine cones or pine needles to create a holiday scene that also works as a conversation starter.

Instructions

1. Cut a square of burlap craft ribbon, and center it over the tip of a small foam cone.
2. Press a sewing pin through each of the four corners of the burlap square, pushing directly into the foam to keep the fabric in place. Allow a bit of the fabric to lift up at the top and in between the pins.
3. Continue folding small squares of burlap ribbon in half and pinning them around the circumference of the cone. Attach them to the cone in concentric circles until the entire cone is filled from top to bottom.
4. Press a wire star into the tip of the foam cone, pushing the end through the burlap.
5. Repeat steps 1 through 4, this time using a large foam cone.
