A fireplace screen holds many important functions. It can keep pets or small children away from your fireplace and add attractive design elements to a room during a time of year when you might not be utilizing your fireplace as often. Finding a fireplace screen you like online can be time-consuming, but making one on your own can add an instant makeover to your great room or living room.

All you need are the shutters, a couple of tools, some paint, and an afternoon well-spent transforming your home by giving it a quick facelift.

3. Line your shutter boards up every other one — the skinnier width next to a thicker width and so on.
4. Mark the holes where the hinges will fit, and using your electric drill, screw the nails into the shutters connecting them together.
5. Paint the shutters with your home decor chalk, taking care to get between the slats well with the color.
