Creating your own bean bag chairs is a fun and practical DIY project perfect for summer lounging. Not only do these chairs offer comfort and style for your outdoor space, but they are also a great way to personalize your patio or garden with your favorite fabrics and colors. Making them at home allows you to customize their size and design to fit your personal preferences and outdoor decor.
These DIY bean bag chairs can be a fantastic addition to your outdoor living area. Opt for fabrics that blend with your outdoor theme – tropical prints for a summer vibe, earth tones for a natural look, or bright vibrant colors to add a pop of fun. Complement your bean bags with outdoor pillows, throws, or even a matching outdoor rug. Arrange the bean bags in a casual seating area around a low table or a fire pit to create a welcoming atmosphere for gatherings.
Outdoor Bean Bag Chairs

Materials
15 pieces of outdoor fabric (dimensions: 20x20 inches each), can be same fabric or different
Heavy-duty thread
Scissors
Measuring tape
Sewing machine
Pins
Bean bag filler (polystyrene beads or shredded foam)
Zippers (20 inches each, optional for removable covers)
Directions
1. Measure and cut 15 pieces of outdoor fabric, each measuring 20x20 inches.
2. Take three pieces of fabric and sew them together along their edges to form a larger square. Repeat this until you have five larger squares.
3. Arrange the squares in a cross pattern, with one square in the center and the other four extending from each side of the central square.
4. Pin the fabric pieces together where they touch, ensuring that the seams are aligned for a neat finish.
5. Sew the fabric pieces together along the pinned edges, leaving one seam partially open to fill the bean bag later. If using zippers, sew one into one of the seams for easier removable cover.
6. Once all the pieces are sewn together, turn the fabric right side out.
7. Fill the bean bag with bean bag filler to your desired level of firmness.
8. Sew the remaining open seam shut, or zip close if using a zipper.
9. Make sure all seams are securely sewn to prevent any filler from escaping.

Variations & Tips
You can vary the size of the fabric pieces to create larger or smaller bean bags as per your need. Experiment with different shapes such as round or triangular instead of square. For added functionality, include handles on the sides for easy portability. You can also make removable covers with zippers for easy cleaning, or use waterproof lining inside the bean bag for added durability in outdoor conditions. Mix and match different fabric patterns and colors to create unique, personalized bean bags for each family member.
