DIY Woven Denim Throw Pillow
Materials
Old pair of blue jeans (or multiple pairs for variety in shades)
Plastic grid (size depends on desired pillow dimensions)
Scissors
Needle and thread (or sewing machine)
Pillow insert or stuffing
Directions
Cut the legs off the jeans and then cut them into long strips, approximately 2 inches wide.
Lay out the plastic grid on a flat surface and start weaving the denim strips through the grid. Alternate the pattern by weaving one strip over and under the grid strands, then reverse with the next strip.
Once the grid is fully covered with woven denim, ensure all strips are taut and adjust as necessary.
Use a needle and thread to secure the ends of the denim strips to the grid, ensuring they don’t unravel.
Cut a piece of fabric from the remaining jeans to cover the back of the pillow. Sew this piece to the edges of the woven denim grid, leaving one side open.
Insert the pillow stuffing or pillow insert into the pocket created by the sewn grid and fabric backing.
Sew the open side closed to finish your pillow.
Variations & Tips
For a more colorful and eclectic look, consider using denim from jeans of different colors, such as black, white, or pastel shades. You can also incorporate fabric paint or dye to customize the denim before weaving. Additionally, try experimenting with different weaving patterns, such as a diagonal weave or adding decorative stitching to the denim strips for a personalized touch. If a more structured pillow is desired, use interfacing on the denim strips before weaving to add stiffness and shape.
