Creating a tiered bird bath using clay planters is a wonderful way to enhance your garden's aesthetics. This project not only provides a functional bird bath but also introduces a charming vertical element to your outdoor space. The use of construction adhesive ensures durability and stability, making it a practical choice for garden enthusiasts.
This tiered bird bath can serve as a focal point in any garden. Its vibrant blue hue will stand out beautifully against green foliage, adding a pop of color to your outdoor decor. Consider placing it near a seating area to enjoy watching birds as they visit. Its vertical form can also complement other garden features like trellises or garden sculptures.
DIY Tiered Bird Bath from Stacked Clay Planters
Materials
3 large clay planters (increasingly smaller sizes)
Heavy-duty construction adhesive
Outdoor spray paint (blue)
Clear acrylic sealer
Sandpaper (medium grit)
Protective gloves
Painter's tape
Drop cloth or old newspaper
Directions
Start by cleaning all the clay planters thoroughly to remove any dust or dirt.
Sand any rough edges on the planters to ensure a smooth surface for painting and adhesion.
Lay down a drop cloth or old newspapers to protect your work area. Apply painter's tape to any areas of the planters you do not wish to paint.
Wearing protective gloves, spray each planter with the blue outdoor spray paint. Apply multiple thin coats as needed, allowing drying time between coats.
Once the paint is dry, apply a clear acrylic sealer to protect the color from the elements.
Begin stacking the planters from largest to smallest. Apply a generous amount of heavy-duty construction adhesive between each planter layer, ensuring they are centered and aligned.
Press each layer firmly and allow the adhesive to cure according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Once the adhesive has cured, fill the topmost planter with water to create the bird bath.
Variations & Tips
For a different look, consider using planters in various shapes or experimenting with different color schemes to match your garden theme. You can also use different sizes or add decorative stones or mosaic tiles to the outer surface of the planters for additional texture. If you prefer a more rustic look, leave the planters unpainted for a natural terracotta finish. Additionally, you can incorporate a small solar-powered fountain pump to add a soothing water feature element.
