Transforming your backyard with functional and stylish elements can enhance both usability and aesthetics. One such project is converting a large galvanized metal trough into a DIY potting soil bin by attaching a solid pine wood lid. This home improvement not only improves the organization of your gardening space but also adds a touch of rustic charm to your outdoor area. The sturdy lid keeps potting soil dry and protected from the elements, ensuring your gardening supplies are always ready for use.
This DIY potting soil bin serves as both a functional storage solution and a decorative piece. The combination of natural pine wood and galvanized metal gives a rustic yet modern look that complements various backyard styles, from cottage gardens to contemporary landscapes. Place it near your gardening area for easy access, or use it as a focal point in your outdoor design by surrounding it with potted plants and garden decor.
DIY Potting Soil Bin with Pine Wood Lid

Materials
Large galvanized metal trough
Solid pine wood plank (cut to fit the trough as a lid)
Outdoor wood sealant
Galvanized bolts and nuts
Drill with metal and wood drill bits
Measuring tape
Pencil
Sandpaper (medium grit)
Paintbrush
Directions
Measure the top dimensions of your galvanized metal trough to determine the size of the pine wood lid needed.
Cut the solid pine wood plank to fit these dimensions, ensuring it slightly overhangs on all sides for easy handling.
Sand the edges and surface of the wood to remove any splinters and create a smooth finish.
Apply an outdoor wood sealant to protect the wood from moisture and weathering. Allow it to dry completely.
Place the pine wood lid on top of the trough and mark where the bolts will go. You'll need at least four bolts, one near each corner.
Drill holes through the wood lid and the top edge of the metal trough at the marked points.
Insert galvanized bolts through the holes and secure them with nuts from underneath. Ensure the lid is firmly attached but can be easily lifted.
Optionally, add handles to the lid for easier lifting.
Wipe down the trough and lid to remove any debris or dust from the installation.

Variations & Tips
For a personalized touch, consider staining the pine wood lid in a color that complements your outdoor decor. Alternatively, you can paint the lid with weather-resistant outdoor paint for a pop of color. For added functionality, attach small hooks to the sides of the trough for hanging gardening tools, or add a hinge mechanism to the lid for easier access. If you have limited space, consider using a smaller trough and wood piece to create a compact version of this DIY.
