In the world of DIY garden decor, creative upcycling is taking center stage. Transforming empty tuna cans and mason jars into hanging garden lanterns is not only a sustainable project but also an enchanting way to illuminate your outdoor spaces. These charming lanterns add a rustic and whimsical touch to any garden, making them perfect for setting a magical ambiance during evening gatherings or simply enjoying a peaceful night under the stars.
These DIY hanging garden lanterns can be styled to complement a variety of outdoor themes. For a rustic look, pair them with wooden furniture and burlap accents. If you prefer a more modern aesthetic, hang them from sleek metal hooks and surround them with minimalistic planters. To enhance a romantic ambiance, incorporate fairy lights or votive candles inside the jars for a soft, warm glow. These lanterns are versatile enough to be the focal point in a garden nook or to line a pathway for a welcoming feel.
DIY Hanging Garden Lanterns
Materials
Empty tuna cans (cleaned and labels removed)
Glass mason jars with lids
Sturdy wire (20-gauge)
Wire cutters
Pliers
Spray paint (optional, for tuna cans)
Tealight candles or LED lights
Hooks for hanging
Directions
If desired, spray paint the empty tuna cans in a color of your choice and let them dry completely.
Using the pliers, create two small holes on opposite sides of the top rim of each tuna can.
Cut a length of wire approximately 12 inches long. Thread the wire through one hole, leaving an equal length on both sides, and twist to secure, creating a handle for hanging.
Place the mason jar inside the tuna can so that the lid of the jar is flush with the top of the can.
Secure the mason jar by winding additional wire around the neck of the jar and the can, ensuring it is tight enough to hold the jar securely in place.
Insert a tealight candle or LED light inside the mason jar.
Hang the lanterns in your garden using the wire handles on hooks or branches, arranging them at varying heights for visual interest.
Variations & Tips
For a personalized touch, consider painting the tuna cans in different colors to match your garden's theme. You can also use different sizes of mason jars for a varied look. If you prefer a more eco-friendly approach, opt for solar-powered LED lights instead of candles. To add a touch of elegance, wrap the wire handles with string lights or decorative beads. For those who enjoy a bit of fragrance, place scented candles inside the jars to add another sensory element to your garden experience.
