In the quest for a unique and budget-friendly way to add a rustic charm to your living room, this DIY project transforms ordinary plastic trash cans into a stylish side table. The simplicity and cost-effectiveness of using dollar store items make this a popular choice for DIY enthusiasts looking to enhance their home decor without breaking the bank.
This rustic side table pairs beautifully with a cozy, farmhouse-style living room. Consider placing it next to a neutral-colored sofa or armchair, accented with a plush throw blanket and a few decorative pillows. To complete the look, add a small potted plant or a vintage lamp on top of the table.
Rustic Jute Rope Side Table

Materials
2 plastic trash cans (approximately 12 inches in diameter and 15 inches in height)
Thick jute rope (approximately 150 feet)
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Scissors
Measuring tape
Optional: round wooden board for tabletop (same diameter as trash cans)
Directions
Start by cleaning the plastic trash cans to ensure the glue adheres properly.
Using the hot glue gun, attach one end of the jute rope at the base of one trash can.
Begin wrapping the rope around the trash can, applying hot glue every few inches to secure it in place.
Continue wrapping the rope tightly until you reach the top rim of the trash can. Cut the rope and securely glue the end.
Repeat the wrapping process for the second trash can.
Once both trash cans are wrapped, stack them on top of each other, ensuring they are aligned.
If using a wooden board for the tabletop, glue it onto the top trash can for a flat surface.
Trim any excess rope threads and ensure all ends are securely glued down.

Variations & Tips
For a personalized touch, consider painting the wooden tabletop in a color that complements your existing decor. You can also experiment with different rope colors or textures, such as sisal or hemp, for a varied look. Adding decorative elements like stencils or painted patterns on the rope can further enhance its aesthetic appeal. For increased stability, use a small amount of adhesive between the stacked trash cans.
