This DIY project transforms scratched plastic toy frisbees into practical and stylish flying disc hanging bird feeders. By crocheting durable thin nylon rope around these frisbees, you create a new use for old toys, while also adding a charming touch to your garden. This craft is not only an eco-friendly way to upcycle, but it also provides a functional and decorative element to your outdoor space.
This hanging bird feeder can be styled in a variety of ways. Hang it from a tree branch, a pergola, or near a window where you can enjoy watching the birds. Coordinate the color of the nylon rope with your garden's color scheme for a cohesive look. Consider placing it in a spot that catches sunlight to highlight the vibrant colors of the rope.
Crocheted Nylon Rope Flying Disc Bird Feeder
Materials
2 scratched up plastic toy frisbees
Thin durable nylon rope (approximately 200 yards)
Crochet hook size H/8 (5 mm)
Scissors
Drill with a small bit for making holes
Metal ring for hanging (optional)
Directions
Start by cleaning the frisbees thoroughly to remove any dirt or residues.
Using the drill, make four evenly spaced small holes near the edge of each frisbee. These will be used to attach the crochet work to the frisbee.
Take your nylon rope and crochet hook and begin by making a slip knot.
Chain 5 and then join to form a ring with a slip stitch.
Round 1: Chain 3 (counts as a double crochet), make 11 double crochets into the ring. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the chain 3. (12 stitches)
Round 2: Chain 3, double crochet into the same stitch. Then make 2 double crochets in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch. (24 stitches)
Continue to crochet in the round, increasing by making 2 double crochets in every other stitch in the next round, every third stitch in the next, and so on, until the crocheted piece covers the frisbee.
Once the desired size is reached, line up the crochet piece with the frisbee and use the nylon rope to sew the crochet piece to the frisbee through the holes made earlier.
If desired, attach a metal ring to the top for hanging using the nylon rope. Ensure it is securely attached.
Repeat the process for the second frisbee if making multiple feeders.
Variations & Tips
For a more personalized touch, consider using multiple colors of nylon rope to create a striped or patterned effect in your crochet work. You can also experiment with different crochet stitches to add texture. If you don't have frisbees, consider using similarly sized plastic plates as a base. Additionally, adding small bells or beads to the ends of the crochet work can create gentle sounds that attract birds.
