This eco-friendly project not only recycles materials but also adds a personal touch to your backyard decor. Ideal for those who enjoy DIY projects and want to create sustainable, eye-catching pieces for their garden, this tutorial will guide you through creating stunning cement towel planters.
These cement towel planters work beautifully in rustic or industrial-style gardens. They can be styled with succulents or vibrant flowers to add a pop of color against the gray cement. Arrange them in clusters at various heights for a dynamic look, or place them as standalone pieces on a patio or near a garden path to create focal points.
Cement Towel Planters
Materials
1 frayed bath towel
5-gallon bucket
Quikrete or any fast-setting cement mix
Water
Rubber gloves
Plastic sheet or garbage bag
Directions
Lay out a plastic sheet or garbage bag to protect your workspace.
Put on rubber gloves to protect your hands from the cement.
Mix the cement with water in the 5-gallon bucket following the instructions on the cement package until you reach a thick, pancake batter consistency.
Submerge the frayed bath towel into the cement mixture, ensuring it is fully saturated.
Lift the towel out of the bucket, allowing excess cement to drip back into the bucket.
Drape the cement-saturated towel over an upside-down bucket or a large bowl to shape it. Adjust the folds and drapes as desired to create an interesting texture.
Allow the towel to dry and cure fully for at least 24-48 hours.
Once completely dry, gently remove the planter from its mold and place it in your garden.
Fill with soil and your choice of plants.
Variations & Tips
Experiment with different towel sizes for varied planter shapes. Consider adding color to the cement mix using powdered pigments for a vibrant twist. You can also embed small stones or shells into the surface while the cement is still wet to create decorative patterns. For a more refined finish, sand the edges of the planter once it is dry. Additionally, using a towel with different textures or patterns can result in unique surface designs on the cement.
