Transform everyday materials into a stylish faux-woven rattan outdoor side table that will have your neighbors asking where you purchased it. This DIY project utilizes melted yellow plastic mesh produce bags, making it not only creative and fun but also eco-friendly. Repurposing these common household items gives them a new life and a unique look that mimics the aesthetic of woven rattan.
This faux-woven rattan table complements a variety of outdoor settings. Pair it with natural materials like wood or stone for a harmonious look. Add potted plants or a small lantern on top to enhance its charm. The vibrant yellow adds a pop of color and can work well with neutral tones or a tropical-themed outdoor space.
Faux-Woven Rattan Outdoor Side Table
Materials
Yellow plastic mesh produce bags (approximately 10-12)
Aluminum baking sheet
Two 18-inch circular MDF boards
Wooden dowels (1/2 inch diameter, 4 pieces, 18 inches each)
High-temperature adhesive
Sandpaper (medium grit)
Spray paint in natural rattan color (optional)
Directions
Preheat the oven to a low temperature (around 200°F) to prepare for melting the plastic mesh bags.
Lay the yellow plastic mesh produce bags flat on the aluminum baking sheet, ensuring they are not overlapping too much.
Place the baking sheet in the oven and monitor closely as the plastic begins to melt and fuse together, forming a textured surface. This should take approximately 5-10 minutes.
Once melted, carefully remove the sheet from the oven and let it cool completely. The fused plastic will serve as the table's 'woven' surface.
Sand the edges of the MDF boards to smooth any roughness.
Attach the wooden dowels to one of the MDF boards using high-temperature adhesive. Space them evenly apart to serve as the table legs.
Once secure, place the second MDF board on top, creating a sandwich with the dowels in between. Secure with adhesive.
Cut the cooled, melted plastic mesh into strips and wrap them around the dowels and along the edges of the MDF boards, securing with adhesive to mimic a woven pattern.
For a more natural appearance, spray paint the table in a rattan color, ensuring the paint is suitable for plastic surfaces.
Allow the table to dry completely before using it outdoors.
Variations & Tips
Consider using different colored plastic mesh bags to match your outdoor decor. For those looking for a more subdued look, use neutral-colored mesh or apply a wood-grain spray paint. To enhance durability, apply a clear sealant suitable for outdoor use. Experiment with different shapes and sizes of the tabletop by cutting the MDF boards into squares or ovals. Personalize further by adding decorative trims or embellishments around the edges.
