Four wooden cutting boards, each measuring approximately 12 x 18 inches
Thick natural fiber rope, 0.75 inches in diameter, approximately 40 feet in length
Wood stain in your preferred color
Sandpaper, medium and fine grit
Drill with a 1-inch wood drill bit
Tape measure
Pencil
Scissors
Protective gloves
Outdoor wood sealant
Directions
Sand each cutting board using medium and then fine grit sandpaper to ensure a smooth surface.
Stain the boards using your chosen wood stain. Apply evenly and allow to dry completely.
Measure and mark 2 inches from each corner of every board. These marks will be where you drill the holes for the rope.
Using a drill with a 1-inch wood drill bit, carefully drill holes at each marked spot on all four boards.
Cut the rope into four equal lengths of 10 feet each.
Thread one end of the rope through a hole in one corner of the first board. Knot the rope underneath to secure the board in place.
Repeat the threading and knotting process for the remaining corners of the first board.
Space the second board at your desired height above the first, then thread and knot the ropes through its corners. Ensure even spacing and level alignment.
Continue the process for the remaining boards, maintaining consistent spacing and level alignment.
Once all boards are secured, apply an outdoor wood sealant to protect against weather elements.
Hang your finished plant shelf on the porch using hooks or brackets, ensuring it's securely fastened for stability.
Variations & Tips
For a more personalized touch, consider using colored ropes or painting the wood in bold hues to match your outdoor decor. To increase durability, opt for weather-resistant wood like cedar or teak. If you're looking for a more industrial look, replace the natural fiber rope with metal chains or cables. For added stability, consider attaching the bottom board directly to a porch railing or wall. To further customize, add small hooks beneath the bottom shelf for hanging tools or other decorative elements.
