This DIY project transforms old metal colanders into a stunning tiered bird feeder that not only serves a practical purpose but also adds an artistic touch to your garden. By repurposing these everyday kitchen items, you create a unique and functional piece that attracts birds and sparks conversations with neighbors. This is a sustainable way to breathe new life into items that might otherwise be discarded.
The completed bird feeder should be hung in a garden or patio area, ideally near flowering plants or shrubs to attract birds. Consider coordinating the colors of the colanders with the surrounding garden elements for a harmonious look. The metal texture of the colanders will add a rustic charm, and it can be accented with colorful birdseed. The feeder should be positioned at a height that is easily visible but not reachable by predators.
Tiered Metal Colander Bird Feeder

Materials
3 old metal colanders
Drill with metal drill bit
Metal chain (approximately 5 feet)
S-hooks (4 pieces)
Nuts and bolts (3 sets)
Spray paint (optional, for color)
Birdseed
Directions
Select three metal colanders of different sizes for a tiered effect.
Use a drill to make a small hole in the center of the bottom of each colander.
Stack the colanders largest to smallest, aligning the holes at the bottom.
Secure each colander to the one below it using the nuts and bolts through the drilled holes.
Cut the metal chain into three equal lengths. Attach each length to the top rim of the largest colander using S-hooks.
Gather the free ends of the chains and connect them with an additional S-hook to form a pyramid shape for hanging.
If desired, spray paint the colanders in a cohesive color to match your garden's aesthetic. Allow to dry completely.
Hang the bird feeder from a sturdy tree branch or a specially installed hook in your garden.
Fill each tier with birdseed, ensuring an even distribution.

Variations & Tips
For a more personalized touch, consider painting each colander in different colors to create a vibrant, eye-catching piece. Alternatively, you can use decorative chains or ribbons instead of metal chains to add a softer look. Adding small decorative elements like metal charms or beads to the chains can also enhance the aesthetic. If weight permits, you could include a small solar-powered light or decorative bird ornaments atop the feeder for added flair in the evening.
