Transforming everyday items into something beautiful and functional can bring a unique charm to your home. This DIY project turns ordinary soup cans into a stylish hanging herb planter. The beauty of this project lies in its simplicity and the rustic, yet modern, aesthetic it brings to your space. It's perfect for those looking to save space, add greenery to their home, or simply enjoy the satisfaction of creating something with their own hands.
The finished hanging herb planter is ideal for a kitchen setting, bringing fresh herbs within easy reach while cooking. Hang it near a window where your herbs can thrive with natural light. Coordinate the twine with other rustic or natural elements in your decor, such as wooden shelves or a burlap table runner. The metallic gleam of the cans adds a modern contrast to the rustic twine, making it a versatile piece that fits well in both contemporary and farmhouse-style interiors.
Twine-Wrapped Soup Can Hanging Herb Planter
Materials
4 empty soup cans
Natural jute twine (approximately 30 yards)
Strong adhesive or hot glue gun
4 small herb plants (such as basil, mint, thyme, or parsley)
Potting soil
4 hooks or a wooden dowel for hanging
Scissors
Drill with a small drill bit
Directions
Clean and dry the 4 soup cans thoroughly, removing labels if any.
Using the drill, make two small holes near the top edge of each can directly opposite each other for hanging.
Cut a length of twine approximately 5 yards long. Secure one end of the twine inside the top edge of a can using adhesive or hot glue.
Wrap the twine tightly around the can until it is completely covered. Secure the other end of the twine inside the can with adhesive or hot glue.
Repeat the wrapping process for all four cans.
Cut four separate pieces of twine, each about 2 feet long. Thread each piece through the holes you've drilled in each can, tying knots on the inside to secure them.
Fill each can with potting soil and plant your chosen herbs.
Decide on the arrangement of your cans (vertical or staggered) and hang them using hooks or tie the twine lengths to a wooden dowel.
Mount the dowel or hooks on a wall or under a cabinet in your desired location.
Variations & Tips
For a personalized touch, consider painting the soup cans before wrapping them with twine. A matte black or white paint can add a sleek, modern appeal. Alternatively, use colorful twine to complement your kitchen's color scheme. For added functionality, use a chalkboard paint section on each can to label your herbs. This project can also be scaled up by using larger cans or by creating multiple tiers, adding more planting space and visual interest.
